BSNL 3G GPRS Settings

It’s very easy to manually configure BSNL 3G GPRS settings and use internet either on the mobile phone or on a PC connected to the phone thru USB tethering or Mobile Hotspot. As an example, here is how to do it on Motorola Defy+ mobile phone.

Getting internet connection on mobile

1. Phone settings

Start by confirming that the phone is setup as follows:
Settings -> Battery and data manager -> Data Saver -> Off
Settings -> Battery and data manager -> Data Enabled -> On

2. Create APN bsnlnet for using HTTP browsing on mobile and connected PC

Settings -> Wireless and networks -> Mobile networks -> Access point names

Name: bsnlnet
APN: bsnlnet
Proxy: <Not set>

Port: <Not set>
User: <Not set>
Pass: <Not set>Authentication Type: None
APN Proto: IPv4

==> Save settings. In case MCC/MNC values are not set automatically, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Network_Code.

3. If everything goes well, an icon that contains letters indicating network type (one of G: GPRS, E: EDGE or 3G) and two tiny up-down arrows that blink should be displayed on the status bar.

Happy browsing!!

4. Optimization:
4.1. Conserve data usage

Settings -> Battery and data manager -> Data Saver -> On

Note: When Data Saver is ON, downloading of attachments is queued until Wifi/internet is enabled.
Or, when you want to download attachments, temporarily enable Data Saver and specifically download attachments thru Brower -> Menu -> Downloads.

4.2. Add dummy APN nodata so that no apps can use internet in background without your knowledge.

Create APN nodata to completely disable data network:
Settings -> Wireless and networks -> Mobile networks -> Access point names
Name: nodata
APN: nodata
Proxy: <Not set>

Port: <Not set>
User: <Not set>
Pass: <Not set>
Authentication Type: None
APN Proto: IPv4

==> Save settings.

If you feel that some apps are unnecessarily consuming internet when you are not interested in any updates, simply select APN nodata.

Using mobile's internet connection on PC connected thru USB/Wifi

1. Select APN bsnlnet for using internet on PC connected thru USB Tethering or Mobile Hotspot

2. USB Tethering
2.1 Connect USB cable between mobile and PC.
2.2 Turn on USB tethering on mobile.
2.3 Now, you can browse on PC using mobile internet (data) connection.

3. Mobile Hotspot (wifi)
3.1 Configure Mobile Hotspot on the mobile
3.2 Setup Wireless (client) network settings on the PC.
3.3 Now your mobile serves as a Wireless router and you can browse on the PC (or any other device) over the wifi network provided by the mobile.

Note: USB Tethering is safer and consumes less battery than the Mobile Hotspot (wifi) option.

Making WAP internet connection available to mobile

1. If your mobile does not have HTTP Browser, create APN bsnllive for enabling WAP Browsing on mobile.

Name: bsnllive
APN: bsnllive
Proxy: 10.220.67.131
Port: 8080
User: <Not set>

Pass: <Not set>
Authentication Type: None
APN Proto: IPv4
==> Save settings.

Above settings/proxy works for West Zone. Obtain correct values for your zone at http://cellone.in/ds.htm.

In case MCC/MNC values are not set automatically, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Network_Code.

2. Select APN bsnlnet
Now you can use the WAP microbroser for browsing on your mobile.

Selecting the right APN based on your needs:

Only one APN can be used at a time. So select the right APN as suitable for your requirements as follows:
  • bsnlnet: For using HTTP browsing on mobile or PC thru USB tethering or Mobile Hotspot (wifi)
  • bsnllive: For using WAP browsing on mobile
  • nodata: Completely turn internet/data usage off
